WHEREAS, Joan G. Rokus, a retired teacher, community activist, and seven-year member of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors from the Leesburg district, announced on January 11, 1999 that she would not seek a third term on the board of supervisors; and

WHEREAS, with a public-service career spanning three decades, Joan Rokus is best known for her work in historic preservation and with parks and recreation in Loudoun County, helping to form Keep Loudoun Beautiful, the Mount Zion Church Preservation Society, and the Friends of the Stone House at Harper Park; and

WHEREAS, as Loudoun’s representative to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and the board of supervisor’s liaison to the Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Advisory Services Board, Joan Rokus’ work has had a region-wide influence; and

WHEREAS, a Loudoun County resident since 1965, Joan Rokus has served on dozens of boards and committees, including Leadership Loudoun, the Loudoun County Volunteer Board, the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and the Loudoun United Way Executive Board; and

WHEREAS, the people of Loudoun County and the Town of Leesburg are deeply grateful for her work and dedication on behalf of her community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Joan Rokus for her long career of public service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joan Rokus as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for her public service and best wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.
