WHEREAS, the Commonwealth currently owns four “shipping point” farmers’ markets, one each in Southwest Virginia, the Eastern Shore, the Northern Neck and Southeast Virginia; and
WHEREAS, these farmers’ markets have proven beneficial to farmers by providing direct access to local and distant markets and ensuring that their products are stored under optimal conditions prior to shipment; and
WHEREAS, the Southeast farmers’ market, located in Southampton County may benefit Southside Virginia to a much greater extent than it benefits the Hampton Roads region of the state; and
WHEREAS, agriculture is an important component of the economy in the City of Chesapeake, which is one of the Commonwealth’s leaders in soybean, corn and wheat production, as well as an important component of the City’s desired mix of land uses; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chesapeake’s efforts to protect the agricultural economy and land base would be enhanced with the location of a farmers’ market within the City; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services be requested to study the feasibility of establishing a farmers’ market in the City of Chesapeake.
All agencies of the Commonwealth shall provide assistance to the Department for this study, upon request.
The Department shall complete its work in time to submit its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the 2000 Session of the General Assembly as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents.
