SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 402 Offered January 20, 1999 On the death of Henry “Buzz” Dawbarn. ----------

WHEREAS, Henry Dunlop “Buzz” Dawbarn, a former Waynesboro industrialist and state senator, died on December 31, 1998 at the age of 83; and

WHEREAS, born in New York City, Buzz Dawbarn grew up in Ruxton, Maryland, and earned a degree in political science from Princeton, and studied engineering for two years at Johns Hopkins; and

WHEREAS, Buzz Dawbarn founded and was chief executive officer of Dawbarn Brothers, a company that he later sold to W.R. Grace, Inc., and is now Wayne-Tex, a manufacturer of specialty fibers; and

WHEREAS, Buzz Dawbarn later started Camac, Inc., in Bristol, which makes nylon carpet yarns; and

WHEREAS, although his business acumen was substantial, Buzz Dawbarn is more remembered for his philanthropic and community contributions; and

WHEREAS, Buzz Dawbarn established the Staunton, Augusta, Waynesboro Community Foundation to promote education in the three communities by making cash awards to teachers and others who contribute significantly to education in the area; and

WHEREAS, Buzz Dawbarn donated his own home in Waynesboro in the late 1950s to establish a YMCA, and continued to support the organization throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, one of the first leaders to urge regional cooperation between Staunton, Augusta, and Waynesboro for public activities, Buzz Dawbarn supported those cooperative efforts during his 10 years service on the Waynesboro City Council from 1959 to 1968; and

WHEREAS, Buzz Dawbarn continued his service to the community in the Virginia Senate from 1968 to 1974; and

WHEREAS, Henry “Buzz” Dawbarn was a selfless and dynamic civic leader and a tremendous asset to the Waynesboro, Augusta and Staunton area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a singularly dedicated and accomplished Virginian, Henry Dunlop Dawbarn; and be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution to Mary Cameron Dawbarn as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and gratitude for his life of service to the Commonwealth.
