WHEREAS, by fortuitous circumstance, Nita Booth of Chesapeake, a junior at Hampton University, became Miss Virginia 1998, the first African-American to hold the title; and

WHEREAS, Nita Booth’s predecessor, Nicole Johnson, was named Miss America at the annual pageant in Atlantic City, and Nita Booth, the first runner-up in the state pageant and an eminently qualified replacement, was named the new Miss Virginia; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Indian River High School, where she was one of 30 outstanding seniors, Nita Booth was the youngest contestant to win Miss Chesapeake honors when she won the title two years ago at the age of 17; and

WHEREAS, an accomplished performer, Nita Booth has been a member of the Centerstage Children’s Theater and On Cue Productions and appeared regularly on the Disney Channel’s “New Mickey Mouse Club” as a Mousketeer; and

WHEREAS, majoring in mass media arts at Hampton University, Nita Booth has hosted radio shows and pursued advanced training in voice, acting, and dance, all of which served her well at the Miss Virginia pageant; and

WHEREAS, possessing a rare combination of beauty, talent, intelligence, and dedication, Nita Booth will prove an effective advocate for the arts and an exceptional representative of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby congratulate Nita Booth on being named Miss Virginia 1998; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nita Booth as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her many accomplishments.
