Commending Bob Smith.

WHEREAS, for 40 years, Bob Smith was a successful head basketball and baseball coach at Portsmouth’s I. C. Norcom High School; and

WHEREAS, Bob Smith, who also coached basketball for four seasons at Norfolk State University, retired in 1989, but his commitment to the young people of Portsmouth remains strong; and

WHEREAS, at a testimonial dinner four years ago, Bob Smith’s brother, a retired judge in California, gave $1,000 in Bob Smith’s name to his alma mater, Norcom High School, to fund a scholarship; and

WHEREAS, Bob Smith has since given $1,000 annually to the Bob Smith Scholarships to help a young athlete from one of Portsmouth’s high schools attend college; and

WHEREAS, the scholarship, awarded on a rotating basis among Norcom, Churchland, and Wilson high schools, goes not to the star of the team but rather to the solid player who works hard and shows potential; and

WHEREAS, himself a member of various halls of fame, including those of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and West Virginia State University, Bob Smith has established a tradition of helping another young person succeed as he has; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Bob Smith for his generosity and continuing commitment to the youth of Portsmouth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bob Smith as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his continued support of the Bob Smith Scholarships.
