SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 285
Commending Audrey F. Millner.

WHEREAS, Audrey F. Millner, a singularly effective leader in Pittsylvania County’s economic development efforts, retired as executive director of the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization on December 31, 1998; and

WHEREAS, a native of Bassett and a resident of the Danville-Pittsylvania County area for the past 35 years, Audrey Millner is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, holds a master’s degree from the University of Virginia, and has pursued graduate studies at the University of North Carolina and the University of Oklahoma; and

WHEREAS, Audrey Millner became involved in economic development in Pittsylvania in the late 1970s, following a successful career in education, including service as a teacher at Danville Community College and as an administrator with the Pittsylvania County public schools; and

WHEREAS, in 1979 Audrey Millner became director of the Greater Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce, then stayed on as executive director when the Chatham and Gretna Chambers merged to form the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce in 1982; and

WHEREAS, the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization was formed in 1983 to promote economic growth, attract new jobs, and increase the county’s tax base, and Audrey Millner has headed the organization since its founding; and

WHEREAS, under Audrey Millner’s leadership, the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization scored numerous successes in improving the economic climate of Pittsylvania County, attracting new and more diversified industries, and providing jobs for the citizens of the area; and

WHEREAS, no longer as reliant on the textile industry, Pittsylvania County is now home to some 30 new companies, which have invested nearly $200 million and created more than 2,000 jobs; and

WHEREAS, Audrey Millner and the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization have not neglected Pittsylvania’s existing businesses, assisting them with expansions that have created another 1,500 jobs; and

WHEREAS, Audrey Millner’s creative leadership and dedication to the welfare of Pittsylvania County have played a major role in the growth and prosperity of the region, and her commitment, skill, and many talents will be sorely missed; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Audrey F. Millner on the completion of a sterling career of service to the citizens of Pittsylvania County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Audrey F. Millner as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for her long and distinguished career.
