1999 SESSION
WHEREAS, Louis M. “Lou” White, following nearly a half-century of service to the citizens of Norfolk, has sold his service station, one of the city’s dwindling supply of full-service gas stations, and retired; and
WHEREAS, since 1949 Lou White has operated his service station on the corner of Granby Street and Delaware Avenue, building a customer base of unmatched loyalty; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Granby High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball, Lou White served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, earning his chief engineer’s ticket when he was only 22; and
WHEREAS, returning to Norfolk, Lou White opened Lou White’s Gulf Station in 1949 and began a career of offering exceptional service to his customers, from cleaning the windows and filling the tanks to rescuing stranded motorists; and
WHEREAS, Lou White’s station, which was affiliated with Texaco in the 1980s, continued to serve its customers, even through the gasoline shortages of the 1970s; and
WHEREAS, in a time of proliferating self-service stations, Lou White has clung stubbornly to old-fashioned, but much appreciated, ideals of service, and his long-standing relationship with many of his customers is testimony to his hard work and honesty; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Louis M. White on the completion of a long career of honorable service to the citizens of Norfolk; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Louis M. White as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.
