HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 884
Commending Elijah Davis "Dave" Catterton.

WHEREAS, Elijah Davis “Dave” Catterton, an award-winning executive with the Virginia Petroleum Jobbers Association, has announced his plans to retire in 1999; and

WHEREAS, a native of Greene County, Dave Catterton, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, earned two Purple Hearts, and retired as a lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, a 1948 graduate of the University of Virginia, Dave Catterton began as executive director of the Virginia Petroleum Jobbers Association in 1949, and although he retired in 1987, he continued to serve the association as a consultant; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his exemplary service, Dave Catterton was the recipient of the Virginia Oil Man of the Year Award in 1984; and

WHEREAS, Dave Catterton was president of the Virginia Society of Association Executives in 1958 and was given its highest honor, the Award of Excellence, in 1987; and

WHEREAS, a longtime supporter of amateur golf in Virginia, Dave Catterton has been a member of the Virginia State Golf Association board of directors for more than 25 years and was president of the board in 1979-1980; and

WHEREAS, Dave Catterton was captain of the Virginia golf team for 11 years in competitions that matched the best amateur golfers in Virginia against those from North Carolina and South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Dave Catterton’s retirement ends a half century of meritorious service to the petroleum industry in Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Elijah Davis "Dave" Catterton on the completion of an outstanding career of service to the Virginia Petroleum Jobbers Association and the Virginia Society of Association Executives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Elijah Davis Catterton as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his accomplishments and best wishes for a long and rewarding retirement.
