Commending Eddie L. Perry, Sr.

WHEREAS, over a long and varied career, Eddie L. Perry, Sr., has served his church, his community, and the Commonwealth with distinction, compassion, and effectiveness; and

WHEREAS, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, Eddie Perry retired in 1979 at the rank of major, following 21 years of service in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Ohio State University, Eddie Perry joined the Virginia Department of Social Services as director of the Division of Human Resource Management in 1980; and

WHEREAS, after earning a master of divinity degree at Virginia Union University, Eddie Perry was ordained a Baptist minister and became pastor of St. John Church in Charles City County in 1985; and

WHEREAS, despite the demands of his full-time job with the Department of Social Services, from which he is now retired, Eddie Perry has been able to devote considerable time and energy to St. John Church, which has benefited in many ways from his leadership; and

WHEREAS, increasing Sunday worship services from biweekly to weekly, Eddie Perry also led St. John to its affiliation with American Baptist Churches of the South, the reorganization of its choirs, the centennial celebration and development of the church’s constitution, and the strengthening of the board of deacons; and

WHEREAS, Eddie Perry has also been active in the Charles City County community through his roles as youth mentor, team leader for Junior Achievement, founder of a Girl Scout troop at the church, and president of the Charles City Country Chapter of the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, a man of many talents and great dedication to the welfare of others, Eddie Perry has succeeded in balancing the competing roles of state employee, church pastor, and community leader, to the benefit of the citizens of Charles City County and the greater Richmond area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Eddie L. Perry, Sr., for his singular dedication to helping others; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Eddie L. Perry, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and appreciation for his many and ongoing contributions to the Commonwealth.
