1999 SESSION
WHEREAS, 1999 marks the 35th anniversary of Mill Mountain Theatre, which began as summer stock and was named Mill Mountain Playhouse in 1964 at Roanoke's Mill Mountain Rockledge Inn; and
WHEREAS, from 1964 to 1976, when a fire destroyed the theatre, Mill Mountain Playhouse went through several changes, incorporating as a nonprofit organization and using resident acting companies in its later years; and
WHEREAS, following a few years of residence in the old Grandin Theatre, the newly rechristened Mill Mountain Theatre moved to the multicultural complex Center in the Square in downtown Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, Mill Mountain Theatre has since built an enviable regional and national reputation for its commitment to artistic quality and the excellence of its educational programs; and
WHEREAS, Mill Mountain Theatre is especially dedicated to the production of new and developing works, and more than 50 new theatrical works have had their premieres on the Mill Mountain Theatre stage; and
WHEREAS, Mill Mountain Theatre has a new touring group that serves children throughout the Commonwealth and complements the theatre’s other educational programs, such as Theatre in the Schools, daytime student matinees of the annual classic production, and two children’s shows presented annually; and
WHEREAS, from its modest summer stock beginnings, Mill Mountain Theatre has produced more than 300 comedies, dramas, musicals, classics, contemporary plays, and children’s productions over its 35-year history; and
WHEREAS, Mill Mountain Theatre, annually offering 12 productions over its 11 month season, today provides one of the finest professional theatre and drama education programs in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Mill Mountain Theatre on the occasion of its 35th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mill Mountain Theatre as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
