HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 837
Commemorating the achievements and contributions of M. J. “Jack” Brockenbrough.

WHEREAS, M. J. “Jack” Brockenbrough, three-time mayor of the City of Buena Vista and for 20 years one of the city’s leading citizens, died on April 10, 1993; and

WHEREAS, a native of Buena Vista, Jack Brockenbrough served his hometown with uncommon diligence, integrity, and effectiveness for nearly 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Jack Brockenbrough, who attended Washington and Lee University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and served in the United States Army, was involved with the building industry for most of his professional life; and

WHEREAS, first elected to the Buena Vista City Council in 1974, Jack Brockenbrough was reelected six times, usually garnering the highest vote total among all members of the council; and

WHEREAS, Jack Brockenbrough’s popularity with the voters of Buena Vista was rooted in his independence, his willingness to swim against the tide, his unaffected candor, and his strong but unpretentious dedication to the citizens he represented; and

WHEREAS, Jack Brockenbrough was elected mayor by his fellow council members three times, in 1978, 1982, and 1992, further indication of the high regard in which his opinions and abilities were held by council members and citizens alike; and

WHEREAS, many of the signal accomplishments of the Buena Vista City Council, from 1974 to 1993, bear the marks of Jack Brockenbrough, who served his city with great dedication, pride, and affection; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly recognize and commemorate the manifold contributions of M. J. “Jack” Brockenbrough to the happiness and prosperity of the citizens of Buena Vista; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of M. J. “Jack” Brockenbrough as an expression of the great esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
