1999 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department was initially formed in 1891 and continued until 1936 as a volunteer unit which became the first paid fire department established in Martinsville; and
WHEREAS, on September 7, 1949, the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department was reestablished and within a month was assisting the Fire Department in answering fire calls; and
WHEREAS, since its beginning with 35 volunteers in 1949, the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department has been staffed by more than 300 citizen-volunteers and through November 1998, the volunteers have assisted in more than 1,700 fire and emergency calls and salvaged property valued at nearly $6 million; and
WHEREAS, the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department has participated in all major fires in Martinsville over the years, resulting in lives and property saved; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department have raised funds for a salvage truck, one of the most modern in fire service, and for various needed auxiliary equipment; and
WHEREAS, in 1960 the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department was instrumental in the City of Martinsville’s nationwide recognition for its fire prevention programs; and
WHEREAS, for a half century, the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department has been a vital part of its community, protecting life and property and adding immeasurably to the quality of life in Martinsville; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department on the occasion of its golden anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for its many contributions to the Martinsville community.
