WHEREAS, throughout most of his adult life, Thomas Cannon of Richmond has given unstintingly to the less fortunate in his community; and

WHEREAS, what makes Thomas Cannon’s philanthropy even more remarkable is the fact that he is not a wealthy man, and his generous gifts have thus earned him the title of “poor man’s philanthropist”; and

WHEREAS, retired following a 26-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, Thomas Cannon has long been renowned in the Richmond area for writing checks to fund scholarships for deserving students, help struggling parents pay their bills, and assist others in need; and

WHEREAS, in October 1998, Thomas Cannon was honored at Richmond’s Brook Road Post Office, where he spent much of his career, with his own postmark; and

WHEREAS, as part of the ceremonies surrounding the issuance of a new U.S. stamp that honors “Giving and Sharing: An American Tradition,” the postal service appropriately chose a man who embodies those virtues to serve as the centerpiece of its celebration; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Thomas Cannon on this latest recognition of his unique and invaluable impact on his community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Thomas Cannon as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his lifetime of extraordinary generosity toward his fellow citizens.
