HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 768
On the death of Stafford Gorman Whittle III.

WHEREAS, Stafford Gorman Whittle III, a prominent Martinsville businessman, died on September 26, 1998; and

WHEREAS, a native of Martinsville and the son of former Virginia Supreme Court Justice Kennon Caithness Whittle, Stafford Whittle was educated at Augusta Military Academy and Washington and Lee University; and

WHEREAS, during World War II Stafford Whittle served in Europe with the United States 3rd Army, 29th Division, anti-aircraft infantry; and

WHEREAS, for 40 years Stafford Whittle was president of the Burch-Whittle Corporation and was a developer and president of the Chatmoss Corporation; and

WHEREAS, a veteran of four three-year terms on the Martinsville Electoral Board, Stafford Whittle served on the boards of Crestar Bank and the American Furniture Company; and

WHEREAS, a life member of Christ Episcopal Church, Stafford Whittle was a member of Elks Lodge No. 1752 and the Martinsville Kiwanis Club and a former president of the Martinsville Jaycees; and

WHEREAS, Stafford Whittle leaves an enviable legacy of consistent and distinguished service to the Martinsville community, the Commonwealth, and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a fine citizen of Virginia, Stafford Gorman Whittle III; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Stafford Gorman Whittle III as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
