On the death of Malcolm Donald Coe.

WHEREAS, Malcolm Donald Coe, a former journalist and longtime owner and president of Bassett Printing Corporation, died on December 18, 1998; and

WHEREAS, a native of Connecticut, Malcolm Coe was pursuing a career in journalism when World War II intervened; and

WHEREAS, emerging from the war as a highly decorated lieutenant, Malcolm Coe earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from the University of Missouri, and, in 1951, bought the Giles County Virginian; and

WHEREAS, four years later, Malcolm Coe moved to Bassett and purchased the Henry County Journal, a weekly newspaper he operated for more than 20 years; and

WHEREAS, for more than four decades, Malcolm Coe operated Bassett Printing, building the company into a highly successful specialty printer and winning numerous business and trade awards; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Coe was recently inducted into the Printing Industry of Virginia Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Coe was active in the PTA, serving a term as president, and assisted in the publication of Foresight, Founders and Fortitude, a history of industry in Martinsville and Henry County, and From Dust to Glory, the history of Martinsville Speedway; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby mourn the passing of a fine citizen of the Commonwealth, Malcolm Donald Coe; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Malcolm Donald Coe as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
