WHEREAS, funding support is available for training, administrative support and fringe benefit costs for public defenders; and

WHEREAS, while salary levels are relatively comparable between an assistant Commonwealth’s attorney and an assistant public defender, training, administrative support and fringe benefit costs vary significantly; and

WHEREAS, assistant Commonwealth’s attorneys and assistant public defenders should be comparable; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Virginia State Crime Commission be directed to study how much state funding support is necessary to provide assistant Commonwealth’s attorneys with the resources necessary to operate effectively. The Crime Commission should seek data from both Commonwealth’s attorneys and public defenders .

All agencies of the Commonwealth shall provide assistance to the Commission for this study, upon request.

The Commission shall complete its work in time to submit its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the 2000 Session of the General Assembly as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents.
