HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 621
Commending the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center.

WHEREAS, 1999 marks the 50th anniversary of the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center, the largest of the University’s six continuing education centers located throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center is built in the same tradition of excellence championed by Thomas Jefferson, the father of the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center, in its first semester in September 1949, organized 11 credit courses in the areas of liberal arts, education, and engineering, drawing an enrollment of 304 students; and

WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center has grown to become the premier provider of continuing education, serving more than 8,000 students each year by offering master’s degrees and a wide variety of graduate, undergraduate, certificate, and professional development programs; and

WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center provided the foundation for George Mason University, which began as the University College of the University of Virginia in 1958; and

WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center serves a diverse population of adult learners with programs in such fields as education, engineering, urban planning, accounting, public relations, human resources, procurement, small business and financial management, publishing, health care, technology leadership, and many others; and

WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center’s vision focuses on addressing the needs of a high-technology workforce and on making the University’s programs available nationally and globally through the Internet and other learning vehicles; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to excellence in education, the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center will continue to provide a high-quality educational experience for its students while reaching out to nurture new relationships with corporate, educational, civic, and community partners; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the University of Virginia Northern Virginia Center as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for its manifold contributions to the continuing education of the citizens of the Commonwealth.
