HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 583 Designating February 18, 1999, as Critical Care Transport Nurses Day in Virginia.

WHEREAS, on February 18, 1943, the first class of flight nurses graduated from their specialized course of medical training at Bowman Field in Louisville, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, initially trained to care for wounded soldiers during transport on converted cargo planes from the field of battle, transport nurses have, over the past half-century, expanded their role to include the emergency care of critically ill or injured civilians; and

WHEREAS, critical care transport nurses now provide vitally important medical care for patients in ambulances, helicopters, and airplanes; and

WHEREAS, the 1,800 members of the National Flight Nurses Association provide care to critically ill and injured patients at the scene of accidents and during transport between medical facilities in aircraft and ambulances; and

WHEREAS, since 1984 nurses at Pegasus, the University of Virginia Health System, have been part of a team that has safely completed more than 10,000 missions, caring for and comforting critically ill and injured patients and their families; and

WHEREAS, an integral part of modern emergency health care, critical care transport nurses have been instrumental in saving the lives and easing the suffering of countless Virginians; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate February 18, 1999, as Critical Care Transport Nurses Day in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge the citizens of the Commonwealth to take note of the extraordinary skill and dedication of Virginia’s highly trained, motivated, professional, and courageous critical care transport nurses.
