1999 SESSION
996062487WHEREAS, in late 1997, the Turner Ashby High School girls’ basketball team walked off the court despondent, following a loss to William Byrd High School in the final game of the state championship; and
WHEREAS, the sting of that defeat was eliminated on December 5, 1998, as the Turner Ashby Knights won the Virginia High School League Group AA state basketball championship; and
WHEREAS, following a season-opening defeat, the Turner Ashby Knights ran off with 28 consecutive victories, capped by a 71-49 win over the highly ranked Bengals from Bassett High School in the state title game; and
WHEREAS, the title game was tied at halftime, but the Knights relied on tough defense, timely rebounds, and the scoring of guards Marsha Kinder and Jami Cornwell to pull away in the second half, outscoring Bassett by a count of 22-8 in the fourth quarter; and
WHEREAS, the Turner Ashby Knights, coached by Rob Lovell, returned to Bridgewater with a well-earned state basketball championship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Turner Ashby High School girls’ basketball team on its triumphant 1998 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Rob Lovell as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on winning the state Group AA basketball championship.
