HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 531
On the death of Irvin C. Burton, Sr.

WHEREAS, Irvin C. Burton, Sr., a civic leader and community activist in Danville and Pittsylvania County for many years, died on December 8, 1998; and

WHEREAS, a native of Pittsylvania County, Irvin Burton was educated in the Pittsylvania County public schools, worked for more than 30 years in the Dan River Mills, and was the co-owner of a local business; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church, Irvin Burton served the church in numerous capacities, including deacon, superintendent of the Sunday School, and member and chairman of the board of trustees; and

WHEREAS, Irvin Burton was a dedicated and effective community activist, leading the effort to fully involve African Americans in the life of the community; and

WHEREAS, Irvin Burton was instrumental in the effort to include African Americans as Pittsylvania County sheriff’s deputies, worked successfully to provide a black high school for Pittsylvania County students, and served as a mentor for a generation of African-American community leaders; and

WHEREAS, Irvin Burton was an active member of countless organizations, including the NAACP, the Pittsylvania County Safety and Transportation Board, the Pittsylvania County Democratic Party, and the Dan River Blairs Civic League; and

WHEREAS, repeatedly honored for his outstanding community service, Irvin Burton received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Danville Branch of the NAACP, the Outstanding Service Award from the Dan River Blairs Civic League, the Community Action Pioneer Award from the Pittsylvania Community Action Program, and a Service Award from the Pittsylvania County Teachers’ Association; and

WHEREAS, over a long and distinguished career, Irvin Burton served the citizens of Danville and Pittsylvania County with remarkable spirit, dedication, and effectiveness, and his great energy and wise counsel will be sorely missed; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a fine citizen of the Commonwealth, Irvin C. Burton, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Irvin C. Burton, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
