992414323WHEREAS, Sinclair Gordon Stewart, a former superintendent of the Augusta County public schools and a widely respected community leader, died on April 8, 1998; and
WHEREAS, a native of West Virginia, Gordon Stewart, an Army veteran of World War II, earned his undergraduate degree at Mount Union College in Ohio and his master’s degree from the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, an Augusta resident for more than 50 years, Gordon Stewart joined the school system in 1947 and later served as director of instruction and assistant superintendent; and
WHEREAS, Gordon Stewart became superintendent of the Augusta County public schools in the early 1970s, a time of transition and exceptional budgetary constraints; and
WHEREAS, until his retirement in 1980, Gordon Stewart led the Augusta County schools with great professionalism, effectiveness, and compassion, earning the respect and gratitude of Augusta’s political leaders and citizens alike; and
WHEREAS, an active member of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church for more than a half-century, Gordon Stewart served in a variety of leadership roles and was honored in 1988 with elder emeritus status; and
WHEREAS, Gordon Stewart was a member of the board of directors of the United Way since 1946 and was active in the Stonewall Jackson Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which awarded him the Silver Beaver Award; and
WHEREAS, in honor of Gordon Stewart’s many contributions to the education of Augusta County’s young people, the S. Gordon Stewart Middle School in Fort Defiance was named after him; and
WHEREAS, a man of fortitude, dignity, professionalism, and quiet humor, Gordon Stewart leaves a lasting legacy of dedicated service to the citizens of Augusta County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of a fine Virginian, Sinclair Gordon Stewart; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sinclair Gordon Stewart as an expression of the great respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
