1999 SESSION
WHEREAS, Louis A. Brooks, Jr., a prominent Waynesboro businessman who served for many years on Waynesboro City Council and for two terms as mayor, died on September 16, 1998; and
WHEREAS, a native of Charlottesville and a graduate of Duke University, Louis Brooks moved to Waynesboro in 1952, when he established Brooks Sporting Goods, which also had branches in Charlottesville, Staunton, and Harrisonburg; and
WHEREAS, in 1972 Louis Brooks was first elected to Waynesboro City Council, where he served for 12 years, including one term as mayor; and
WHEREAS, Louis Brooks was again elected to City Council in 1992 and served for an additional four years and another term as mayor; and
WHEREAS, Louis Brooks’ service on the City Council was marked by his undisguised affection for the City of Waynesboro and his utter dedication to improving the lives of its citizens; and
WHEREAS, Louis Brooks served as past president of the Waynesboro Exchange and the Waynesboro Touchdown Clubs, and his abiding interest in the Civil War led him to found the Civil War Roundtable of Waynesboro; and
WHEREAS, although his particular City Council achievements lay in the areas of education and the concerns of senior citizens, Louis Brooks’ commitment to the betterment of Waynesboro knew no bounds, and his contributions were many; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a valuable public servant, Louis A. Brooks, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Louis A. Brooks, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s great respect for his memory.
