1999 SESSION
990406323WHEREAS, the girls' tennis team from Fort Defiance High School, in Augusta County, captured the 1998 Virginia High School League Group AA state tennis championship; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Defiance victory was highlighted by the consistently outstanding play of Kay Hill and Jennifer McNeal, the Indians' No. 1 doubles team who won their second consecutive Group AA doubles title; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Defiance Indians compiled a perfect record of 18-0, defeated Graham High School, 6-3, in the state semifinals, then won a thrilling match over Blacksburg High School, 5-4, to win the state title; and
WHEREAS, Madeline Chenoweth's courageous victory, in a marathon No. 3 singles match that lasted over three hours in 90-degree heat, was a crucial moment in the Indians' triumph; and
WHEREAS, the outstanding effort and enthusiasm of Sally Roadcap, Heather Whitescarver, and Sarah Bauman also contributed to the Fort Defiance Indians' perfect season and Coach Bev Coffman's landmark 100th career team victory; and
WHEREAS, the Indians were assisted immeasurably by the support of their parents and fans, many of whom made the trip to Salem for the Group AA state tournament; and
WHEREAS, the exceptional 1998 season of the Fort Defiance High School girls' tennis team is a tribute to the inspired coaching of Bev Coffman; the preparation, hard work, and team spirit of the players; and the unwavering support of the school and the Fort Defiance community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the girls' tennis team from Fort Defiance High School on the successful conclusion of a triumphant 1998 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Bev Coffman in honor of the state championship performance of the Fort Defiance High School girls' tennis team.
