WHEREAS, Glenn P. Lloyd, sheriff of Augusta County and a highly effective law-enforcement officer for more than 30 years, died on June 27, 1998; and

WHEREAS, a native of Staunton, Glenn Lloyd attended Staunton public schools, was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, and earned an associate degree in law enforcement from Blue Ridge Community College; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Lloyd also graduated from the National FBI Academy in Quantico and received advanced training from the Virginia State Sheriffs' Association, the City Sheriffs' Association, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the University of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, following service with the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam, for which he was awarded the bronze star, Glenn Lloyd joined the Augusta County Sheriff's Department in 1967, thus beginning a stellar law-enforcement career that would last more than three decades; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Lloyd worked his way up through the ranks of the Augusta County Sheriff's Department to deputy investigator and chief deputy before winning the election for Augusta County sheriff in 1983; and

WHEREAS, during his long tenure in Augusta County, Glenn Lloyd witnessed many changes, and it is a tribute to his leadership skills that the sheriff's office was able to meet the challenges of a growing, increasingly urban county; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Lloyd was widely credited with increasing the professionalism of his officers through training and with enhancing cooperation among law-enforcement agencies; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Glenn Lloyd was admired and respected by law-enforcement professionals, local and state political leaders, and the citizens of Augusta County, whom he served with singular dedication, unquestioned integrity, and quiet competence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the untimely passing of a fine public servant, Sheriff Glenn P. Lloyd; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sheriff Glenn P. Lloyd as an expression of the great respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
