HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 245 Offered January 26, 1998 Memorializing the Congress to place a condensed version of the United States Constitution on the one-dollar bill. ---------- Patron-- Hargrove ---------- Referred to Committee on Rules ----------

WHEREAS, Article I, Section 8, Clause 5 of the United States Constitution grants to the Congress the power to coin money; and

WHEREAS, many Americans are unaware of the provisions of the Constitution, one of the most remarkable and important documents in world history; and

WHEREAS, an abbreviated version of this essential document, consisting of the preamble, a list of the articles, and a list of the amendments, could easily be placed on the reverse of the one-dollar bill; and

WHEREAS, placing the Constitution on the one-dollar bill, a unit of currency used daily by virtually all Americans, would serve to remind the people of the historical importance of the Constitution and its impact on their lives today; and

WHEREAS, Americans would be reminded by the preamble of the blessings of liberty; by the articles, of the framework of the government; and by the amendments, of the historical changes to the document that forms the very core of the American experience; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby urge the Congress to direct that the United States one-dollar bill be redesigned to incorporate a condensed version of the United States Constitution on its reverse side; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit copies of this resolution to the President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the President of the United States Senate, and the members of the Virginia Congressional delegation so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia.
