Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 46.2-917.3 as follows:
§ 46.2-917.3. Local school boards may require certain bus inspections.
In addition to vehicle safety inspections required under Article 21 (§ 46.2-1157 et seq.) of Chapter 10 of this title, any school board may require periodic safety inspections of buses chartered to transport students who attend school within the school division. Such inspections shall be conducted at such frequency; be expressed in terms of vehicle mileage, days of service, or both; include such items; and be performed by such inspectors as the school board in its discretion shall determine. Inspection requirements developed under this section may be contained in regulations promulgated by the school board, in the terms of contracts governing the charter of the buses, or partly in such regulations and partly in such contracts. Any school board requiring inspections under this section may require that any bus that fails any such inspection be withdrawn from service transporting students until all defects detected by the inspection have been repaired and the repairs have been verified by a reinspection of the bus.
