1998 SPECIAL SESSION I
985880376WHEREAS, the Washington and Lee High School Eagles won the 1998 Virginia High School League Group A state basketball championship; and
WHEREAS, by defeating the Trojans of John Battle High School, 68-62, the Eagles returned to Westmoreland County with Washington and Lee's first-ever state basketball title; and
WHEREAS, ranked at the top of the Group A standings for most of the year, the Eagles withstood the pressure of high expectations to finish the season with a school-record mark of 26 victories; and
WHEREAS, to advance to the title game, the Washington and Lee Eagles had first to defeat an exceptionally talented team from Haysi High School -- a team that had lost only one game to Group A competition in two years; and
WHEREAS, the Eagles fought back from a huge first-quarter deficit to defeat the Haysi Tigers, 75-73, to qualify for the final game, where they prevailed in another thrilling contest against John Battle; and
WHEREAS, the Group A tournament was contested in Norfolk, and the Eagles benefited from extraordinary community support, as approximately one of every seven residents of Westmoreland County made the journey to cheer for the team; and
WHEREAS, in the state tournament, Coach Mark Comer's Eagles relied on teamwork, balanced scoring, and spirited defense to win the most significant victories in the school's history; and
WHEREAS, the historic triumph of the Washington and Lee Eagles was a tribute to the talent and tenacity of the players, the inspired leadership of the coaching staff, and the undying support of the Westmoreland County community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Washington and Lee High School boys' basketball team on its unprecedented 1997-1998 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mark Comer as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the Washington and Lee High School Eagles.
