SUMMARY:

Study; Mandatory professional development for contract teachers. Establishes a joint subcommittee to study, among other things, whether professional development programs should be required for contract teachers. The joint subcommittee is to (i) determine the status and educational needs of the teaching force in the Commonwealth; (ii) assess the extent to which contract teachers participate in in-service training and educational courses for endorsement and re-licensure; (iii) review the revised teacher licensure regulations vis-?-vis the SOLs, SOAs, and higher education restructuring; (iv) assess the need for financial support to assist contract teachers in attaining the skills necessary for instructing students relative to the SOLs; (v) determine whether mandatory on-going professional development for contract teachers is necessary; and (vi) recommend ways to assist teachers in meeting the requirements of the SOLs and SOAs. Referred by Speaker's letter to the House Education Committee to conduct the study.
