WHEREAS, on December 6, 1997, the Hampton High School football team demonstrated once again why at least four national rating services have named the Crabbers the top high school football team in the country; and
WHEREAS, utterly dominant for the third straight year, the Crabbers defeated a strong team from William Fleming High School in Roanoke, 51-8, to claim their third consecutive Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 5 state championship; and
WHEREAS, only once before in the early 1920s has a team won three straight state titles in Virginia, and no team in the history of Virginia High School League football can match Hampton High School's streak of 40 consecutive victories; and
WHEREAS, Hampton's championship was the 10th of Head Coach Mike Smith's career and the 15th overall for the Crabbers; and
WHEREAS, Hampton High School last lost a football game on September 1, 1995, and in 12 playoff games during the past three years, the Crabbers have outscored their opponents by a margin of more than five to one, winning by an average of 36 points; and
WHEREAS, in capping a flawless 13-0 season with still another state title, the Crabbers brilliantly withstood the pressure of high expectations, lived up to their reputations, and cemented their position as Virginia's finest high school football team; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Crabbers of Hampton High School on their superlative 1997 football season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mike Smith as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the 1997 Hampton High School football team.
