SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 233
Commending the Westvaco Corporation.

WHEREAS, for most of its 30-year history, Jackson River Enterprises, a private, nonprofit vocational training and placement agency, has relied on the corporate goodwill of its Covington neighbor, Westvaco; and

WHEREAS, Jackson River Enterprises, a United Fund organization, provides job training and sheltered employment for the mentally and physically disabled population of the Alleghany Highlands; and

WHEREAS, the Westvaco Corporation, a large, multinational paper and packaging firm, has a plant in Covington that has provided support for Jackson River Enterprises in a variety of ways; and

WHEREAS, with support from Westvaco, Jackson River Enterprises expanded into the recycling industry about six years ago, with the result that Jackson River Enterprises now fills the recycling needs of the Cities of Covington and Clifton Forge, the Counties of Alleghany and Bath, and the Town of Iron Gate; and

WHEREAS, the recycling activities provide Jackson River Enterprises' workers with opportunities to learn higher level job skills, making them better qualified and more employable in the wider job market; and

WHEREAS, Westvaco also contracts with Jackson River Enterprises for several important functions at its Covington plant, including lawn care, snow removal, quality control testing, and clerical help; and

WHEREAS, in addition to employment opportunities and financial support, Westvaco provides Jackson River Enterprises with advisory assistance, as many Westvaco employees serve as board and committee members for Jackson River Enterprises; and

WHEREAS, the exceptional support offered by the Westvaco Corporation to Jackson River Enterprises has been a vital element in the success of the venture and in the continuing expansion of services offered to the developmentally disabled population of the Alleghany Highlands; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Westvaco Corporation on its successful and sustained willingness to become involved in the needs of its community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Westvaco Corporation as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for its enlightened support of Jackson River Enterprises.
