WHEREAS, the Reverend Charles Hart celebrated his 40th year of service in the ministry in 1997, including the last 22 years as pastor of Norfolk's Mount Zion Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Rev. Hart came to Norfolk in 1975, after holding pastoral posts in Dallas, North Carolina, and Richmond; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Johnson C. Smith College, Rev. Hart holds a master's degree from Virginia Union University and a doctor of divinity degree from the Teamer School of Religion; and
WHEREAS, since becoming pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Rev. Hart has overseen a large building project, the paying off of the church's mortgage, and the implementation of several innovative programs; and
WHEREAS, active in the church and the community, Rev. Hart is the first African-American to serve as president of the Great Bridge Clergy Association and has served as president of the Tidewater Metro Baptist Ministers Conference and as a board member of the Hampton Ministers Conference and Choir Guild; and
WHEREAS, Rev. Hart also serves as a member of the board of the Southside Boys and Girls Club; and
WHEREAS, over the span of four decades, Rev. Charles Hart has built a remarkable career of service to the Norfolk community and to the 500 members of Mount Zion Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly congratulate the Reverend Charles Hart on the occasion of his 40th anniversary as a pastor; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Charles Hart as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his remarkable career.
