WHEREAS, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, founded in Portsmouth in 1968, is dedicated to honoring Virginia's outstanding athletes, to preserving the records of teams and individuals, to maintaining high ideals and traditions of sports as a positive influence on youth, and to encouraging sports participation under competent leadership; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum was established to honor athletes who have achieved greatness in competition and who have served as outstanding role models for the youth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, for 30 years the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has honored more than 160 inductees, representing the finest athletes in the history of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Museum, which draws more than 30,000 visitors annually, exhibits a display case of memorabilia for each of its inductees; and

WHEREAS, in 1996 the General Assembly designated the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum as the official Sports Hall of Fame of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum for its exemplary success in preserving Virginia's rich athletic tradition; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James L. Williams, president, and Eddie Webb, executive director, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the signal accomplishments of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
