SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 148
Commending Sheila Quinn.

WHEREAS, Sheila Quinn joined WFLS radio in Fredericksburg as a news reporter in 1985 and a year later was named news director; and

WHEREAS, under Sheila Quinn's stewardship, WFLS has won an impressive array of awards, for the overall excellence of the news operation and for individual accomplishment; and

WHEREAS, WFLS has been cited twice by the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters as the Outstanding News Operation of the Year and has also won awards for producing the best spot news story, coverage of a continuing news story, documentary or in-depth report, and feature or human interest story; and

WHEREAS, Sheila Quinn has herself been cited for outstanding effort by an individual reporter, as have several other WFLS news reporters; and

WHEREAS, WFLS twice won the Douglas Southall Freeman Award for Public Service through Journalism and for six consecutive years has won the Frank H. Fuller Member Award for News Reporting to the Associated Press; and

WHEREAS, WFLS has earned similar recognition from The Associated Press, for outstanding participation; from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters, for news operation, news promotion, and best morning show; and from the Radio-Television News Directors Association, for newscast, spot news coverage, news series, and continuing new series; and

WHEREAS, in 1997 WFLS won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for its continuing coverage of the controversy surrounding Wal-Mart and Ferry Farm, George Washington's boyhood home; and

WHEREAS, for more than a decade, Sheila Quinn has led the news department at WFLS, during which time the station has taken an already strong news operation to new heights of excellence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Sheila Quinn on her outstanding record of achievement with WFLS; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sheila Quinn as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and admiration for her many professional accomplishments.
