1998 SESSION
WHEREAS, George Washington, hero of the American Revolution, first President of the United States, and the father of his country, died on December 14, 1799; and
WHEREAS, as the Commonwealth, home to this greatest of American heroes, approaches the bicentennial of his death, it is appropriate that Virginia's citizens reflect on the legacy of George Washington and its meaning as the third millennium approaches; and
WHEREAS, George Washington's many contributions to the Commonwealth and the nation, as a soldier, politician, and statesman, serve as a reminder of the true meaning of public service; and
WHEREAS, in a time of increasing apathy and cynicism toward public affairs, public service, and the political process, it is well to reflect on the ideal embodied by George Washington, who served his nation with uncommon valor, integrity, and humility; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly urge the citizens of the Commonwealth to commemorate the approaching bicentennial anniversary of the death of George Washington by rededicating themselves to the ideals of character, leadership, self-sacrifice, and public service that he so brilliantly and consistently represented and also by undertaking appropriate programs of commendation to honor this great American and Virginian.
