SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 116
Encouraging localities in the Commonwealth to establish community policing programs.

WHEREAS, community policing programs are established in most local jurisdictions in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, community policing programs are effective alternatives in fighting crime, enlisting community support and participation, and improving relations between law enforcement and the communities they serve; and

WHEREAS, citizens involved in community policing jurisdictions are more likely to participate in a Neighborhood Watch Program, serve as volunteers within the agency and on agency-coordinated patrols, and attend a citizen police academy; and

WHEREAS, community policing programs can be tailored in a variety of ways to fit the community's needs and the jurisdiction's resources; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That localities in the Commonwealth be encouraged to establish community policing programs; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Executive Director of the Virginia Association of Counties, the President of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Sheriffs' Association, and the Director of the Virginia Municipal League, and request that copies of this resolution be disseminated to their members in order that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
