Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 33.1-200.3 as follows:

§ 33.1-200.3. Installation and maintenance of certain warning lights.

Upon the request of the local governing body, the Department shall install on any highway in the state primary or secondary highway system appropriate signal lights to warn highway traffic of the egress of emergency vehicles onto any such highway. The cost of any such installation shall be borne by the Department, provided (i) requirements relating to sight distances and traffic volume, established by the Department, are met and (ii) such installation is approved by the Department's resident engineer responsible for the installation. Costs of maintenance of any lights installed under this section shall be borne by the locality in which the lights are located.
