989842368WHEREAS, reading is a basic skill for high-quality education, a requirement for a successful life's work, and a source of pleasure throughout life; and
WHEREAS, reading ability is essential to preserving democracy and enhancing every Virginian's quality of life; and
WHEREAS, the skill of reading is one that every parent can foster and encourage before and throughout a child's schooling; and
WHEREAS, the American Library Association, the National Family Literacy Council, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, Reading is Fundamental, and the International Reading Association have joined with the National Education Association and the Virginia Education Association to designate March 2, 1998, as the focal point for a variety of reading activities in and beyond school; and
WHEREAS, it is important to focus attention on this vital component of learning; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That March 2, 1998, be celebrated as Read Across America Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the House of Delegates commend the success of Dr. Seuss and other authors who have enticed children to discover the joy of reading; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the House of Delegates urge all parents to read with their children for at least one-half hour on March 2, 1998, in honor of Dr. Seuss, in furtherance of the Commonwealth's Standards of Learning and to help ensure high-quality education for all schoolchildren in Virginia.
