WHEREAS, James L. Eason, who has served as mayor of the City of Hampton for 16 years, has announced his resignation to become president of the Hampton Roads Partnership, effective May 18, 1998; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Hampton High School and the University of North Carolina, James Eason served on the Hampton School Board before becoming the city's first citizen-elected mayor in 1982; and
WHEREAS, reelected in 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996, Mayor Eason has led the City of Hampton with great skill, clear vision, and a commitment to making Hampton the most livable city in America; and
WHEREAS, James Eason's tenure will be long remembered for the great strides the city has made in attracting such companies as Gateway 2000, with its many high-tech jobs; in developing such public-private projects as the Holiday Inn Conference Center; and in planning such developments as the Crossroads Project; and
WHEREAS, James Eason will also be remembered as a leader with a clear vision for the City of Hampton, a vision he has pursued throughout his 16 years at the helm; and
WHEREAS, helping families, ensuring that young people are healthy when they go to school, and revitalizing neighborhoods were at least as high on Mayor Eason's agenda as his better-known economic development efforts; and
WHEREAS, Mayor James Eason leaves a city with a nearly finalized strategic plan, a blueprint that will guide city policy makers for the next several years, and with a momentum created during his tenure that will continue to carry Hampton forward into the new millennium; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend James L. Eason on the completion of an exemplary term of office as mayor of the City of Hampton; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James L. Eason as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for his service to the citizens of Hampton and best wishes for continued success with the Hampton Roads Partnership.
