HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 430
Designating October 1998 as John Glenn/NASA Langley Month in Virginia.

WHEREAS, the NASA Langley Research Center, founded in Hampton in 1917, is among the nation's premier research laboratories; and

WHEREAS, NASA Langley is a national leader in aeronautics, space transportation technology, and atmospheric sciences research; and

WHEREAS, America's first human space flight program, Project Mercury, began at NASA Langley, and America's "Original Seven" astronauts trained there beginning in 1959; and

WHEREAS, United States Senator John H. Glenn, Jr., one of the Original Seven astronauts, trained extensively at NASA Langley in preparation for his historic flight of February 20, 1962, during which he became the first American to orbit the earth; and

WHEREAS, on February 16, 1998, it was announced that John Glenn will again journey into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-95 mission in October 1998; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia wishes to honor John Glenn's lifetime of heroic and singular contributions to the United States civil space program, the United States Senate, and the United States Marine Corps; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly, in honor of the achievements of Senator John Glenn and the NASA Langley Research Center, designate the month of October 1998 as John Glenn/NASA Langley Month in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Senator John H. Glenn, Jr., and NASA Langley Research Center Director Dr. Jeremiah F. Creedon in order that they may be apprised of the action of the General Assembly of Virginia.
