WHEREAS, Kevin Denson, boys' soccer coach at Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, was named the 1997 National High School Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA); and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College, Kevin Denson has been boys' soccer coach at Kempsville High School since 1985, compiling a career coaching record of 172-37-15; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Denson's 1997 Kempsville team finished with a 21-1-1 record, won the 1997 state soccer championship, and was ranked as the top team in the nation among teams playing in the spring; and
WHEREAS, Coach Denson's Kempsville teams are no stranger to such success, having previously earned state titles in 1987, 1991, and 1992, and having been ranked first in the nation in 1992; and
WHEREAS, Coach Denson has also won numerous previous coaching awards, including Virginia High School League Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1997; Virginia Youth Soccer Coach of the Year in 1989; NSCAA Virginia High School Coach of the Year in 1991, 1992, and 1997; and National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year for Region 2 in 1987; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Denson is the first coach from Tidewater to win the prestigious NSCAA national recognition and the first from Virginia in 25 years; and
WHEREAS, the consistent, sustained excellence of Kempsville High School's boys' soccer teams, evident in their three state championships this decade, can be attributed in large measure to the coaching talent and dedication of Kevin Denson; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Coach Kevin Denson on his recognition as National High School Coach of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kevin Denson as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his extraordinary coaching success.
