985760340WHEREAS, Gustav S. Eyssell, a former executive with New York's Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center who in his retirement was active in historic preservation in Virginia, died on January 28, 1998; and
WHEREAS, Gustav Eyssell, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, arrived in New York City at the start of the Depression and was assistant general manager of Radio City Music Hall when it was converted from vaudeville to a venue for stage shows and movies; and
WHEREAS, Gustav Eyssell filled a number of roles at Radio City Music Hall, including president and general manager, before moving to Rockefeller Center as vice president and, later, president; and
WHEREAS, under the stewardship of Gustav Eyssell, Rockefeller Center experienced its greatest expansion, adding three new skyscrapers with as many as 54 floors; and
WHEREAS, following his retirement in 1970, Gustav Eyssell moved to the community of Hamilton, in Loudoun County, and became active in local historic preservation efforts; and
WHEREAS, Gustav Eyssell's expertise, gained during his 25 years as trustee of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, was welcomed in Loudoun County, where he was a member and past director of the Waterford Foundation and a former chairman of the board of trustees of Oatlands, a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Leesburg; and
WHEREAS, throughout a long life of remarkable variety and consistent achievement, Gustav Eyssell found time to devote his considerable talents and energy to the preservation of some of the Commonwealth's most historic and valuable properties; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of a uniquely successful and valuable Virginian, Gustav S. Eyssell; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Gustav S. Eyssell as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
