HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 361
Commending the Old Dominion University women's basketball team.

WHEREAS, the Lady Monarchs basketball team from Old Dominion University won 34 games and lost only two during the 1996-97 season; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Monarchs captured their sixth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship and advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament for the sixth straight year; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Monarchs then advanced through the NCAA tournament draw to the Women's Basketball Final Four in Cincinnati on March 27 and 29, 1997; and

WHEREAS, in the NCAA semifinal game the Lady Monarchs recorded the biggest comeback victory in tournament history when they rallied to defeat Stanford University, 83-82, in overtime, to advance to the championship game against the University of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Monarchs were part of the NCAA tournament championship game, which was televised by ESPN and was the highest-rated NCAA basketball game in cable television history; and

WHEREAS, Old Dominion Head Coach Wendy Larry was named the National Coach of the Year by The Sporting News and the Women's Basketball Writers of America and was named Virginia Coach of the Year and Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season; and

WHEREAS, Lady Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro and center Clarisse Machanguana earned Kodak All-American honors, while Penicheiro also earned All-American status from The Sporting News, the Associated Press, and Basketball Times; and

WHEREAS, Ticha Penicheiro was recognized for the second straight year as Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, and Clarisse Machanguana was named the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament's Most Valuable Player; and

WHEREAS, the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs provided national exposure for their university and the Commonwealth by appearing five times during the season on ESPN and espn2, while playing before 130,000 fans during the season; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Lady Monarchs basketball team from Old Dominion University on the completion of an exceptionally successful 1996-97 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Wendy Larry as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the Lady Monarchs basketball team and best wishes for continued success.
