WHEREAS, during the 1996-97 school year, Fauquier High School's athletic teams enjoyed an unprecedented string of successes; and
WHEREAS, the boys' basketball team from Fauquier High School completed an undefeated Northwestern District season, won 19 consecutive games, won the Region II, Group AA championship, and advanced to the "Final Four" in the state basketball tournament; and
WHEREAS, the Fauquier Falcons also won the Marshall Johnson Sportsmanship Award at the Virginia High School League Group AA tournament and finished the season with a sparkling record of 24-3, the most victories in the history of boys' basketball at Fauquier High School; and
WHEREAS, both the boys' and girls' soccer teams also established new school records for victories in a season, with 17 wins for the boys and 15 wins for the girls; and
WHEREAS, the Fauquier boys' soccer team was crowned regular season champion and advanced to the semifinals in the regional tournament, while the girls' team was district runner-up and Region II champion; and
WHEREAS, the Fauquier Falcons girls' softball team added notably to the record of success, winning the district championship, placing second in the region, and advancing to the semifinals in the state tournament; and
WHEREAS, the softball team also set a school record for victories, with 20, and compiled an outstanding 12-2 record in district play; and
WHEREAS, in individual achievement, Fauquier High School was well represented by track and field athlete Mike Kirby, who won the state championship in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Fauquier Falcons athletic teams was unprecedented, and their many championships stand as a tribute to the dedication and talent of the athletes, the inspired leadership of their coaches, and the unflagging support of the Fauquier community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Fauquier High School athletic teams on their outstanding performances; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Fauquier High School with the warm congratulations of the members of the General Assembly.
