1998 SESSION
WHEREAS, the William Byrd High School golf team, avenging an earlier defeat at the hands of district rival Salem High School, won the 1997 Virginia High School League Group AA state golf championship in convincing fashion; and
WHEREAS, playing on an extremely difficult Spotswood Country Club course in Harrisonburg, the William Byrd Terriers led by 13 strokes after the first day, then stretched their lead to win going away by 29 strokes; and
WHEREAS, team balance was a key factor for the Terriers, as all four scorers for William Byrd finished in the top 15 in the tournament; and
WHEREAS, Mike Damiano finished fourth in the tournament, followed closely by teammate Robbie Craft in fifth; Scott Wise finished in a tie for sixth and Tommy Austin was tied for 11th overall; and
WHEREAS, the championship was the second for William Byrd in the past six years and the fourth for teams from the Blue Ridge District in the 1990s; and
WHEREAS, the coaching of Head Coach Tim Chocklett was crucial to the Terriers, as he kept his young players focused on their goal despite windy conditions and exceedingly difficult pin placements; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the William Byrd High School golf team on its outstanding 1997 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Tim Chocklett in honor of the state championship performance of the William Byrd Terriers golf team.
