WHEREAS, Paul M. Shuford, a prominent Richmond attorney for nearly 50 years and a valued advisor to many members of the General Assembly, died on September 25, 1997; and
WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Paul Shuford earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Washington and Lee University, where he was editor of the law review; and
WHEREAS, following service with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, for which he received a Purple Heart, Paul Shuford began practicing law in Richmond in 1948; and
WHEREAS, the lead partner in the law firm of Shuford, Rubin and Gibney, Paul Shuford served as legal counsel and advisor to the campaigns of former U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., former Representative David E. Satterfield, and other Democratic candidates; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his service as president of the Richmond Bar Association in 1972, Paul Shuford was a life member of the Virginia Bar Association and served as chair of the Third District Committee and on Virginia State Bar Council during the 1980s; and
WHEREAS, among his community service activities, Paul Shuford served as a trustee for the Collegiate School and the Seventh Street Christian Church, as president of the River Road Citizens Association, and as a member of the Commonwealth Club; and
WHEREAS, Paul Shuford also combined his intellect, sharp wit, and talent for telling humorous stories with his gentleman's demeanor as legislative counsel for numerous associations and groups to inform, advise, and assist the members of the General Assembly in making decisions that were in the best interests of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an exceptionally talented and dedicated Virginian, Paul M. Shuford; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Paul M. Shuford as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
