HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 234 Offered January 26, 1998 Requesting the Virginia Department of Transportation to establish survey benchmarks along highway rights-of-way. ---------- Patron-- Tate ---------- Referred to Committee on Transportation ----------

WHEREAS, in several areas of the Commonwealth, there are few if any rigorously established benchmarks upon which to base land surveys and similar activities; and

WHEREAS, this lack of benchmarks complicates land surveying, may cause confusion and can result in inaccuracy of property boundaries and land records; and

WHEREAS, portions of Virginia's state-maintained highway system extend into all localities in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, it seems highly desirable and reasonable to establish survey benchmarks within and along state-maintained highway rights-of-way in those areas of the Commonwealth experiencing a lack or insufficiency of such benchmarks; and

WHEREAS, it may be desirable and feasible to use global positioning technology to improve the accuracy and minimize the costs of establishing such benchmarks; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Virginia Department of Transportation be requested to include the establishment of survey benchmarks and/or similar datum points along state-maintained highway rights-of-way as part of their highway maintenance and construction activities; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Commonwealth Transportation Commissioner in order that he may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
