WHEREAS, Southwest Virginia has not experienced the growth that other regions of Virginia have in the development of technology-based industry; and
WHEREAS, Southwest Virginia has relatively high unemployment rates when compared to the state as a whole, and has not experienced the growth in its labor force as have other areas in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Southwest Virginia, however, has a number of universities and colleges in the area that produce an abundance of professional and highly-skilled workers seeking employment; and
WHEREAS, the economic development efforts of Southwest Virginia as a region would be greatly enhanced if a local office of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership were opened in the region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Virginia Economic Development Partnership be requested to open an office in Southwest Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Virginia Economic Development Partnership in order that it may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
