1998 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Medal of Honor, established by the United States Congress on July 12, 1862, is the highest military award for bravery that can be awarded to any individual in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Medal of Honor is awarded in the name of Congress to a person who, while a member of the armed forces, distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States, while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United State is not a belligerent party; and
WHEREAS, the award of the Medal of Honor requires unquestionable proof of the performance of service; and
WHEREAS, the few persons awarded the Medal of Honor are the very embodiment of patriotism, selflessness, courage, and devotion to duty and can serve as worthy examples to Americans of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That all state, regional, and local governmental entities be requested, when naming any building, highway, bridge, or other structure or facility in honor of a distinguished person, to be mindful of and give due consideration to naming a building, highway, bridge, or other structure or facility in honor of a Virginian whose character and achievements merited the award of the Medal of Honor; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit copies of this resolution to the Commonwealth Transportation Board, the Virginia Association of Counties, the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions, the Virginia Department of Veterans' Affairs, and the Virginia Municipal League, in order that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
