HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 15 Offered January 14, 1998 Prefiled December 22, 1997 Commending the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center. ---------- Patrons-- Landes, Katzen and Weatherholtz; Senator: Hanger ----------

WHEREAS, in November 1997, the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville marked its 50th anniversary of service to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1947, the Center was named after President Woodrow Wilson, who, in 1920, signed into law the first Federal Vocational Rehabilitation Act, which provided services to those disabled in industry; and

WHEREAS, since its founding, the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center has focused on helping people with disabilities become economically self-sufficient, able to live and work in the community; and

WHEREAS, the Center has prospered over its half-century of existence and is now the only such facility in Virginia and one of about 10 in the country; and

WHEREAS, with the closing of its acute care facility in 1996, the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center has expanded its rehabilitation facilities by 40 beds, enabling it to admit even more people with disabilities to learn the skills necessary to live independently and gain employment; and

WHEREAS, in the Center's holistic approach to students, staff is now organized by teams, rather than departments, which allows more responsiveness, coordination, flexibility, and a personal approach to the needs of students; and

WHEREAS, the Center draws substantial support from volunteers, over 150 of whom contributed over 37,000 hours of service during 1996; and

WHEREAS, throughout its 50 years of service, the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center has established an enviable record of success in assisting Virginians with disabilities to live independent, rewarding, and productive lives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center on the occasion of its golden anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center as an expression of the General Assembly's respect and admiration for its exemplary record of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
