HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 135
Commending Akikazu Sakamoto.

WHEREAS, Akikazu Sakamoto has been the Virginia Port Authority's Tokyo marketing representative for the past 20 years, dating from July of 1977; and

WHEREAS, Akikazu Sakamoto will retire in February 1998 after a long and distinguished career of service to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, hired by the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) to handle port-related matters, Akikazu Sakamoto, as the only Virginia representative, was also responsible for conducting business for the Virginia Department of Economic Development; and

WHEREAS, Akikazu Sakamoto established the Virginia Port Authority's reputation as a world-class port throughout Asia by being the first VPA representative in Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Republic of China, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia; and

WHEREAS, Akikazu Sakamoto has been instrumental in securing major shipping lines for the Port of Virginia, including K-Line, NYK, Mitsui, Toko Line, Tokai Line, OOCL, Evergreen and NOL; and

WHEREAS, Akikazu Sakamoto has played a vital role in attracting major Japanese investment to the Commonwealth from such companies as Canon, Yupo and Mitsubishi Chemical; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Akikazu Sakamoto on his long and beneficial service to the Commonwealth and the Virginia Port Authority; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Akikazu Sakamoto as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for his exceptional achievements and best wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.
